Botox, Dysport, Xeomin & Relfydess —
What’s the Difference?

If you’ve started researching anti-wrinkle treatments, you’ve probably come across a few different names — Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Relfydess — and wondered what on earth the difference is. It’s a genuinely good question, and one we get asked at almost every consultation.

They all do the same thing

All four products contain botulinum toxin type A — a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the muscle it’s injected into, which softens the lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement. When people say “Botox” they’re often using it as a catch-all term — a bit like saying “Hoover” when you mean any vacuum cleaner. Botox® is actually a specific brand made by Allergan.

So why do different brands exist?

Each product has a slightly different formulation, which affects how quickly it works, how it spreads in the tissue, and how long it lasts.

Dysport® — Most Popular

Dysport has a formulation that allows for smooth, natural diffusion through the tissue. It tends to work slightly faster than some other brands and is one of the most widely used anti-wrinkle products in New Zealand. Xeomin®

Xeomin is notable for its highly purified formulation. Unlike some other products, it contains no accessory proteins alongside the active toxin. Some evidence suggests this may reduce the small chance of developing resistance over time with repeated treatments. Priced at $15 per unit.

Relfydess® — New

Relfydess is the newest option we offer. It’s designed to be fast-acting and long-lasting — clinical studies have shown onset of effect within 24–48 hours in some patients, and duration that can extend beyond the typical 3–4 months. Priced at $8 per unit.

Does the brand matter more than the injector?

Honestly? The injector matters more. The skill, experience, and approach of the person administering the treatment has a far greater impact on your result than which brand is used. A conservative dose, precise placement, and a thorough facial assessment will give you a natural result regardless of which product is chosen.
